After a long day at work, probably the last thing you want to do is to bust out all your cooking pots and pans to cook a healthy home cook meal. Garlic five spice baked chicken is a perfect recipe that you can use in advance to marinade your chicken and then throw it into the oven to bake after work. I often make large batches of garlic five spice baked chicken (15 – 20 drum sticks) and freeze half of the portion for later use.
Recipe (Prep time: 30 minutes ; Cook time: 45 minutes ; Feeds: 1 – 2)
- 15 – 20 drum sticks (may also use chicken breast, wings, thighs or mixture)
- 30 cloves of garlic
- 1 cup of low-sodium soy sauce
- 1 cup of water
- 1 tbs of five spice
- 4 tbs of sugar
Marinade Steps:
- Blend the garlic in a food processor ‘or’ chop the garlic by hand
- Mix garlic, soy sauce, water, five space and sugar together in a large pan / container
- Place chicken inside the marinade in step 2
- Marinate the chicken for at least 6 hours before baking
- (Optional) Take the drum sticks (8 – 10) out of the marinade and place it into a ziplock bag
- Divide the batch into 2 separate bags
- Don’t forget to pour the marinades into the ziplock so it can continue to marinade
- If you like, you can place 1 of the ziplock bag into a freezer for later use
Baking Instructions:
- Set your conventional oven to 450 degrees
- Take the drum sticks out of the marinated and place it on a cooking sheet
- Bake on 450 for 30 minutes
- Put it on broil and bake for 10 – 15 minutes to brown the skin (and make it nice and crispy)
- (Optional) You can eat it as it or over rice
